How it is calculated
- Net → gross: net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
- Gross → net: gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Amounts are rounded to whole cents. The VAT is the difference between gross and net.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add VAT to a net amount?
Multiply the net amount by 1 plus the VAT rate. At 20 %: 100 net × 1.20 = 120 gross, of which 20 is VAT.
How do I remove VAT from a gross amount?
Divide the gross amount by 1 plus the VAT rate. At 20 %: 120 ÷ 1.20 = 100 net. Simply deducting 20 % of the gross amount is a common mistake: it gives 96, which is wrong.
Which VAT rates apply in the EU?
Every EU country sets its own rates. Standard rates range from 17 % in Luxembourg to 27 % in Hungary, and most countries also have one or more reduced rates. Choose the country above to use its standard rate.
How do I calculate only the VAT?
From a net amount: net × rate ÷ 100. From a gross amount: gross − gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). The calculator shows the VAT as a separate line.
